Private messages do not work on the forum, have you disabled them?

I think it's a feature of phpBB that wiz has turned off (if it was ever turned on)

My own profile is set to allow emails and PMs from other users, but I don't see a way either can happen

Hi guys, don’t stress everything is ok. Been extremely busy lately, rest assured wcms is not abandoned. If there is silence for months (hopefully not), fork this CMS and make it survive if there is interest :)

PM’s were disabled a while ago due to abuse of spammers, was easier to solve this way.

Celebrating 16 years of existence, cheers to members like yourselves!

Ah, good to hear from you Wiz! Yeah, I know I've not been particularly active on the forum these past months either. Truth be told I've had something of a career change and now do mostly magazine layout rather than web design, so that's taken much of my focus. I still love this CMS though and I wish I had more time to dedicate to tinkering with it.

Do you have any roadmap or longer term plans for the CMS? The guts of it function fine but I do wonder if we're being held back by Summernote. Bootstrap is such an anchor to have to drag at this point. I've been experimenting with TIne MCE (https://www.tiny.cloud/) and Trumbowyg (https://alex-d.github.io/Trumbowyg/documentation/) which seem more robust and have generous free plans, which would almost certainly cover the use case of most WCMS users.

Something to think about for version 4.0 maybe! I've been using Chat GPT 4 to help me code the past few months. It can do simple tasks but I was trying to add an image processor to WCMS, something which would re-save images as compressed webp images but after several hours I think we both gave up, haha. I'm not much of a coder I'm afraid, CSS and SEO were always my web strengths, javascript I was basically pushed into by necessity.

Still, no matter what I'll always love being part of this project. I'll be putting a new website online which uses it this week, so I'll be sure to share the results.

frameworks are one of the reasons why I partially migrated to my own CMS, I hate bootstrap and thick code. Instead of Summernote, I preferred NicEdit because the functionality is the same (you can add or remove if necessary), and there is no problem when the image stretches wider than the screen when you look at it on your phone. convenient. I previously offered it in 1.* 2.* versions. what's there, in versions 0.6 and 0.4 too.

according to layout:
I like it when the layout is done just right, without the slightest problem. It's the content that's important, not the fluffy lollipop design.

Next sore subject: sections. There is a blog script, but it is hardcoded. this is bad.

Re: External Editors

Post by NorfolkGreg »

There's been some topic drift from "Private Messages", which I'm going to continue, so I suggest this post is moved to Community Chat, but that's a decision for Wiz.

OneManLaptop's post at: viewtopic.php?p=8254#p8254 and turboblack's response at viewtopic.php?p=8255#p8255 both suggest alternatives to Summernote.

I've been wondering what the inclusion of a WYSIWYG editor says about about the expected or intended user of WonderCMS.

I first used WonderCMS when I needed to pass on maintenance of a web site I maintained for my wife's professional association when she was about to retire. The site had a handful of pages that were largely static and would not change, except for notifications about vacancies or (at the time) the effect of changing COVID regulations.

There were two things of concern to me. The guy taking over was a complete newbie to HTML. He would need to change links to member profile pages on a page with a long list of post codes and he would need to create new member profile pages, that would include a head and shoulders photo but would largely be a copy and paste job followed by editing the content.

Initially, I expected to have him use Summernote, but on testing, quickly realised that something as simple as hitting a backspace key one too many times in the middle of the list of post codes could corrupt the whole thing and he wouldn't have the capacity to recover the situation. (More recently, I've realised that this isn't a Summernote issue but is caused by the default editor's auto-correction feature.)

The result was that I ended up acquainting him the handful of HTML tags used on the various pages of the site and showed him how to use the default editor. He's been running the site entirely by himself for the last two years without further support from me.

The point of the tale is to say that I believe we should only encourage or suggest the use of a WYSIWYG editor if the planned site is to have no more than a handful of pages. That's because all the plug-in WYSIWYG editors I know insert in-line styling code which makes the work put into designing a theme largely redundant.

So rather than spend time working on improving WYSIWYG editing, WonderCMS should be promoted as a vehicle for building somewhat larger sites as there's precious little point in developing a theme if users are encouraged to use an editor that will ignore it.

In short, I believe it is far better to acquaint HTML newbies with a few common tags and and provide them with an editor that makes it easy for them to add correctly formatted tags. I'm working on this on my at at:
https://gregchapman.uk/wondercms
where I discuss the variable editors available and a possible alternate for Windows users. My plan is to add further recommendations for other platforms. I'd love feedback on my critiques of Summernote and Monaco.

I have found an editor that runs well under Android and ChromeOS
(search for "Pocket Editor" in Google Play) and works in a similar way to Monaco, but I would prefer to recommend an editor that makes it easy to insert predefined snippets rather than operates with auto-complete. While that feature helps experienced coders it is not as helpful for those taking their first steps with HTML which is the user I have in mind to try to support.

In the case described above, isn’t it easier to use something like Word and just copy from there?
edit large amounts of data (if the page is long, constantly go up to the menu to select an option), it’s easier to have the document on your computer in some editor like Word, edit it there, and then transfer it completely (with images, inserts, tables, etc.) to the site? Summernote is convenient if the page is small and not complex.

And by the way, yes - it is advisable to move the topic.
we could consult if we had some kind of telegram channel, if you don’t want private messages
